Rockwool Insulation in Modular Homes
Rockwool (mineral wool) insulation is one of the most common insulation materials in Irish modular homes — prized for its fire resistance, thermal performance and acoustic insulation. This guide explains what rockwool is, why it's used in modular homes, and what to ask your builder.
What Is Rockwool Insulation?
Rockwool is a mineral wool insulation made from molten rock spun into fibres. It's used in the walls, roof and floors of modular homes as the insulating core of sandwich panels or between framing members.
Why Rockwool Is Used in Modular Homes
1. A1 Fire Rating
Rockwool is A1 fire-rated — the highest fire performance classification. It doesn't burn, doesn't produce smoke, and doesn't spread flame. This is a major safety advantage in a home.
2. Thermal Performance
Rockwool has excellent thermal insulation — a 100mm rockwool core keeps heat in during Irish winters and out during rare summer heat.
3. Acoustic Insulation
Rockwool is one of the best acoustic insulators — it dampens sound between rooms and from outside, making a modular home quieter.
4. Moisture Resistance
Rockwool is water-repellent yet vapour-permeable — it doesn't hold moisture, so it doesn't rot or lose performance if it gets damp.
5. Dimensional Stability
Rockwool doesn't slump, shrink or settle over time — it keeps its insulating performance for the life of the home.
What to Ask Your Builder
- Is the insulation rockwool? — and what thickness?
- What's the fire rating? — A1 is the best
- What U-value does it achieve? — walls, roof, floor
- Is it the full envelope? — walls, roof and floors
